Science Olympiad is unique as there are both individual medals and team awards. If a student puts in the effort, they will be rewarded. Should I join Science Olympiad? - Do you like science, engineering, or technology? - Do you enjoy competing with other students on STEM topics? - Are you interested in a future career in a STEM field? - Do you like to travel for competitions? - Do you like to learn new things? - Do you want to meet an awesome group of HMN students? - Would you like to meet once a week to learn your subject? If you answered yes to any of these, you should. How can I join? Send in your application to your science teachers or Ms. Hernandez by September 27th, 2019. Due to team size constraints, only 50 students can compete. After this, you will be considered an alternate. If you are on varsity, you are committing to being there at all of the competitions we have scheduled. There is an activity fee of $75 paid to the school with the application. Events will be chosen at the discretion of the head and assistant coach. Varsity is required to compete in 3 to 4 events (7th graders typically do 2 to 3 events at the varsity level). When do you meet? Coaches set up individual times for their event. In addition, we will have a Wednesday after school meeting for study events, starting in October. Varsity is required to be there (unless there is a scheduling conflict) and JV is strongly encouraged to be there. For builds, there will be a Friday afterschool meeting to help run test flights or build test devices. How many competitions are there? There are at least two competitions each year for varsity with the potential of a bid to state and nationals. Junior varsity will have at least one competition to attend (depending on the number of students). How many people are on the team? There are 15 students on the Hawthorn Middle North Varsity team. Most of the varsity team members are eighth graders who have worked hard for three years to be part of the varsity team. A select number of seventh graders will be asked to join them through a try out process. There is the potential of two junior varsity teams, consisting of 15 to 18 members each. We have had a very successful program. Let's keep up the good work! What are the Events?
